The approaching holiday shopping season means local businesses have an opportunity to compensate for our sluggish summer tourist season. Small Business Saturday was started by American Express in 2010. It followed the long-standing Black Friday, which has become known as the busiest shopping day of the year, and the more recent Cyber Monday, which was started by Shop.org in 2005 after consumer studies showed the Monday following Thanksgiving to typically be the biggest online shopping day of the year.
